Masks

To channel Lacamo, Peavy made elaborate masks that combine Surrealist touches with indigenous themes. Peavy masked herself with a composite representation of humanity to communicate with the unseen world. While it is unclear exactly when Peavy began creating and using her handmade masks, there is a photo of Peavy wearing one of her masks during her appearance on the 1958 Long John Nebel radio show. She also features her masks in many of her films. Peavy claimed in her writings and films that the masks facilitated her transition into a deep trance, allowing her to communicate directly with Lacamo, who then guided Peavy’s brush across canvas or paper.
